Welcome

Welcome to the website of Dr. Pietari Kääpä.

This site is devoted to all things transnational or ecocritical in studies of cinema and the creative industries.

Pietari Kääpä’s research is focused on transnational concerns in a range of cultural contexts and thematic frameworks. I have published two monographs (2010, 2011) which explore the films of Aki and Mika Kaurismäki from a transnational  angle. My work on transnational concerns ranges from historical studies of Finnish cinema to exploring global interconnections between the Nordic and Hollywood/East Asian cinemas.

I am currently focused on expanding the normative framework of transnational screen studies by synergizing its concerns with ecophilosophy. As a part of this thematic expansion, I am currently working on a monograph on ecology and Nordic film cultures, editing a special issue of Interactions on Ecology and Transnational Chinese Cinemas), and co-editing, with Tommy Gustafsson, the book collection Transnational Ecocinema: Film Culture in an Era of Ecological Transformation for Intellect.
